How to Learn American Accent: 10 Pronunciation Tips
There is one aspect of American English that confuses many people who do not speak English as their native language. This is pronunciation.
If you have been speaking English with American pronunciation for a while, you know why pronunciation can be a difficult skill, especially when learning English as a second language.
For example, in a student’s native language there is most likely a completely different system of intonation, rhythm and timing than in American English. Another problem is that there may be sounds in American English that have no exact equivalent in the student’s native language.
In this article, there are ten tips that are designed to help English language students learn how to pronounce words like Americans do.
1. Learn the sounds of English
Every language has its own particular set of sounds.
It seems that many languages share common sounds, but the fact is that there are often subtle differences between sounds which may sound similar. These differences are very noticeable to native speakers when they hear the language.
Get more tips to learn English fast Learn English online with a full range of videos, articles and live lessons! Explore resources
For example, the short sound “uh” in American English is very different from the “U” sound in Japanese because of the way the sound is made in the mouth. This is why it is important to know how to pronounce all the vowel and consonant sounds in American English.
2. Learn schwa (the neutral vowel sound)
Schwa is a unique sound which is used for almost all unstressed vowels in American English.
Simply put, it sounds like a very weak “uh” and is found in almost every phrase in American English. Schwa may be a short, weak sound, but it is very important since it is a distinctive part of American English.
Now it’s time to practice!
3. Be able to distinguish the sounds L and R
In some languages, R and L are interchangeable, while in others, one or both of the sounds do not exist at all.
Unfortunately, both the R and L sounds are very common in American English, and not knowing how to pronounce one or both sounds properly can lead to a lot of mistakes in your pronunciation.
4. Use a dictionary
If you’re not sure how certain words or sounds are pronounced in American English, there is no reason to be embarrassed. Simply check a dictionary and remember the proper pronunciation.
If you have Internet access, you can easily find audio dictionaries and listen to the correct pronunciation.
5. Make a list of words
There are probably quite a few English words that are challenging for you to pronounce. It would be a good idea to make a list of the words that confuse you as well as words with sounds that are especially difficult for you to pronounce.
6. Watch video lessons
After you have identified which words and sounds are especially difficult for you when you speak English, try watching video lessons that will help you with these words and sounds.
There are quite a few free tutorials on AccentOnSpeaking.com.
You can also subscribe to YouTube channels that are dedicated to teaching American English.
7. Record yourself
You will never really progress in learning American pronunciation if you don’t know your level and how good your conversational skills are. So it is important to record yourself speaking English and listen to it later. You’ll be able to compare your pronunciation with that of native speakers.
8. Speak phrases and sentences
Even if you know how to pronounce every word in English, that doesn’t mean you’ll say them correctly when you have to speak English in an actual conversation. This is especially true if you only say words by themselves and don’t use them in phrases and sentences.
This is why you should practice your pronunciation of American English in real phrases and sentences and not just speak individual words. Remember that words are meant to be used together with other words, not alone. No one speaks just individual words. Everyone speaks in phrases and sentences.
9. Focus on just one sound in each practice session
Try learning sounds gradually. Focus on practicing one sound, and try to understand how it is formed by the organs of speech. This is much more effective than casually going through all the sounds in American English without really examining any of them in detail.
10. Practice, practice, practice!
There are no shortcuts. If you want to be able to regularly pronounce words properly according to American English, your organs of speech need to develop muscle memory in order to pronounce the sounds used.
This is the only way to reach your goal. Continuous practice and repetition are the keys to success. Once your organs of speech understand how to pronounce English words, you’ll never lose the language.
Good luck!
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO CHANGE MY ACCENT?
Example of Improvement Timeline
To help you understand how long it can take to change an accent I’ve put together this timeline. Of course it varies from person to person and on the 3 factors above but this is an outline anyway.
So how do I know all this? From working with thousands of students over 15 years!
Skills One Month After Starting Training:
The first week is spent identifying priority areas, understanding these areas and developing listening skills. Hearing the difference is the first step to achieving real change. Once you can hear the differences you can start adjusting your speech.
A gentle warning! In the first 2 weeks of the course I occasionally hear from a student who is frustrated because they feel like their pronunciation is getting worse!
Their pronunciation is not getting worse – it’s just that they are starting to hear and starting to recognise their errors. It’s just that before – they were blissfully unaware!
Once they develop their listening skills and practise to gain control over the new sound they are learning – they make excellent progress!
I always hear students say at this stage of their training “I can hear the difference now! I can hear things like word stress. I can hear that my speech and tone is flatter than a native speaker. I can hear when I mispronounce my /v/ sounds!”
This is exciting! This awareness an essential step before being able to make any changes.
Skills At Two Months After Starting Training.
With quality training and practise resources most people make very good, noticeable improvements in the first few months. Usually they have improved between around 3 priority areas. For example this might be, rate of speaking, general mouth position, word stress, sentence stress or a particular vowel or consonant sound.
We must remember it’s crucial not to move too fast. As I mentioned, I often have very motivated students (which is brilliant), but they want to move from area on to another area very quickly. They want to ‘learn’ but not spend the time ‘doing’!
Remember that the aim of English Pronunciation training is not to ‘learn’ better English pronunciation it’s to USE better English pronunciation.
Doing is the most important part!!! : )
So a good, quality course will give you LOADS of opportunity to practise you new speech sounds and stress patterns.
This stage focuses on self awareness, monitoring skills and practise. At this stage, our students find that people understand them more clearly and when someone does misunderstand them, they understand why and change their speech to ensure it’s clear the next time and repair the communication breakdown.
I always hear students say at this stage of their training “Sure, I still make mistakes, but most of the time notice and correct it!”
Skills Four Months After Starting Your Course.
This is when real change starts. Four months from starting, many of our clients find that this is when their colleagues and friends often comment that their English pronunciation has improved.
They often notice that they’re easier to understand. The student feels like their confidence has grown.
St this stage, When someone misunderstands them and usually more confident. This is when people start to see big results after so much hard work.
This stage is when students really gain good control of their new sounds. They practise regularly to make their pronunciation of the new sounds easy and automatic.
At this stage I hear students saying “Wow, things are easier now. I don’t have to concentrate as much to make better word stress and correct my sounds”.
Skills Six Months And Beyond
A great English Pronunciation course should give you the skills and knowledge to keep improving and levelling up your pronunciation skills well in to the future.
In other words, it should empower you with the knowledge and skills to continue your improvement forever!
After your training you will know what areas to work on and how to do it!
If you stay aware of your pronunciation, actively listen to your pronunciation and others you will continue to improve.
As you continue to focus on your pronunciation you’ll notice smaller, more subtle differences. The good news is you can also take a break and enjoy the confidence that comes with being easily understood and sounding more like a native english speaker.
American Accent Training: Learn to Speak Like a Native
What American Accent really is
First, let’s discuss what the American accent actually is, how it differs from the British accent and what features set the American accent apart.
First, you should keep in mind that the term “American accent” is a gross oversimplification because there are actually many evolving regional American accents. What most people think as the typical “American accent” is the General American accent which is sometimes called Network English or newscaster English. It is spoken by the majority of Americans.
The modern American accent is older than the British accent and it is closer to how the English language used to be spoken than the U.K. accent is. Wondering why it is so?
The American English, as we know and use today, was the accent originally spoken by the first English colonists who established their first permanent settlement in 1607 in what’s now known as the U.S. They brought their native language with them. In 1776, when the USA declared its independence, British and American accents have not yet diverged and the pronunciation was the same in both countries. But in the past two centuries, the standard British accent has undergone a lot of changes while the typical American accent remained practically the same and we can notice only subtle changes.
The primary feature that separates the General American accent from the British accent is that it is rhotic. Americans pronounce “r” sound in all environments, including after vowels, for example, in such words as winter, car and hard while non-rhotic speakers in the U.K. do not.
Other prominent features of the American accent also include:
At What Age is an Accent Permanent? Can you Change your Accent?
If you take the time to pay attention to how each person you interact with speaks, you quickly discover how different each person can sound, even when they speak the same language. Everyone has an accent, and accents are a significant part of our unique personal identity. They reflect each person’s individual characteristics and heritage. Sometimes, for various reasons people want to change the way they speak, and in those cases, speech therapy can be a very valuable resource. These days it is common for people to move from place to place, country to country. One thing that follows everyone, no matter where they might travel to or relocate to, is their accent. If you want to learn about accent modification and how speech therapy can help, schedule your free introductory call today!
What is an Accent?
Language structure and sounds can vary tremendously between languages and regions. There are fundamental differences that can include the manner in which vowels and consonants are used, combinations of consonants that are common or completely absent, the rhythm and speed of speech, intonation, and which sounds are most likely to occur at the beginning or end of a word.
Since each language has its own individual set of characteristics, when a person learns a new language, they often bring the features of their native language with them. This is what we consider an accent. A successful accent modification program must begin with a strong understanding of these differences.
What Kind of Challenges can Accents Cause?
Some people who have learned a second (or third! Or fourth!) language and speak with an accent can sometimes struggle to be understood by others when speaking their non-native language. One of the most common challenges comes with speaking sounds or consonant combinations that do not exist in their native language. For instance, a Japanese person learning English may struggle with an L and R sound because those sounds don’t exist in the Japanese language.
Patterns of sound can also vary widely between languages. Some languages may have words that begin and/or end with consonant clusters, whereas other languages will only use one consonant sound between vowels. Sentence structure and word order can also differ greatly between languages, what is correct in one’s native language may sound distinctly foreign in the newly learned language when translated word for word.
Above all, having a strong accent can affect one’s ability to communicate effectively, and can affect one’s ability to succeed socially, academically, and professionally. In some cases, accents disrupt the flow of conversation and can cause the person listening to focus more on the accent than what is actually being said. If you think you could benefit from accent modification with a highly specialized speech therapist, schedule your free introductory call today!
Can you Change your Accent? At What age is an Accent Permanent?
Research has shown that accents become permanent around the age of 12 years old. That being said, it is possible for accents to change over time or for adults to develop a subtle accent after living in a foreign country for an extended period of time. The degree to which accents can change depends greatly on the individual, as well as the system of sounds and sentence structure from the speaker’s native language. While modifying or reducing an accent is possible with the help of a speech and language pathologist, most scientists agree that completely eliminating an accent is extremely difficult, and in most cases, accents are forever.
Who Can Benefit from Accent Modification?
Working on accent modification with a registered speech and language pathologist can benefit a wide range of people.
-People who want to minimize or eliminate a regional accent
-People who have learned English as a second language
-Actors who are preparing for a role that requires an accent
-People who want to learn to communicate more clearly and effectively in school or at work
-Anyone who wants to learn to improve their articulation and enunciation skills
How Can Speech Therapy Help? Can you Lose your Accent Completely?
Accents are unique to each individual, and how strong an accent usually depends on how long the individual has been speaking the language and the level of exposure they have had to practice conversation skills. Eliminating an accent completely isn’t impossible, but it takes a great deal of time and commitment, and complete elimination of the accent is never guaranteed. Speech therapy can be a great resource for someone who wishes to work towards accent reduction.
To begin, the speech therapist will want to learn more about how the individual speaks, including the rhythm and intonation of their speech. They will provide specific sentences for the client to say aloud and will listen carefully for differences. From there the speech therapist will be able to come up with a customized treatment plan that will target the areas of speech that pose the most problems. Specific goals will be set and worked towards with regular appointments. Consistency is key in accent modification and requires dedication and determination from both the speech therapist and the client. A speech therapist can help to teach the mechanics of how speech sounds are formed. Understanding these building blocks of speech and language is the basis of a successful accent modification program. A speech therapist can also help to identify the adjustments that need to be made and help identify any speech patterns that may be incorrect.
Speech therapy is also an excellent opportunity to practice conversation skills, an area that can often be challenging for those who are communicating with an accent. Building confidence in these skills is a very important part of accent modification.
It is important to remember that everyone has an accent, and struggling to speak clearly in one’s non-native language is common and understandable. Languages can be intricate and complicated. That being said, if you or someone you care about needs support with accent reduction or modification or you simply want to learn more about how online speech therapy can help, schedule your free introductory call today by clicking the button below.
